The largest tropical forest on earth is an enormous living laboratory. Irrigated by the Amazon, Negro and Solimões rivers as well as hundreds of affluents, the forest is home to thousands of species, many still unknown to science. Those arriving in Manaus by plane see what looks like a continuous green carpet and have a better understanding of how wide the Amazon spreads over Brazil and bordering countries.

Apart from the amazing landscape, visitors have the chance to see unique natural phenomenae, like the meeting of the waters of the Negro and Solimões rivers. Different densities keep the waters from mixing, and make them flow side by side for as long as 8 km. The diving line is clear because of the colors, one being light brown and the other very dark. The Vitoria Regia, a huge round floating leaf, growing up to 3 meters wide, can be seen on boat trips not very far from the capital Manaus. Indian tribes living close to the margins of the main rivers are used to visitors and make a living of producing beautifully crafted necklaces, bracelets, handmade nets, baskets and clay pots.

Several months of heavy rain per year make Pantanal the largest wetlands in South America. During the rain season, marshes cover most of the region, roads disappear and local farmers have to move their cattle to other areas. When the rain stops, flocks of animals return to the renovated forest to feed and breed. Rare tucanoes, araras, tuiuius and hundres of other bird species take over entire trees. Wild animals as capivaras, javalis and veados are all over, and can be seen from the car window on any road trip. Rivers are home for the feared caymans and piranas, and local fishermen always have great stories to tell. Typical meals, based on meat, fish and a variety of sauces and side dishes, are hearty and a great opportunity for socializing and getting to know more about the people and their culture.

This island was open to tourism in the early 70's, and since then it has become a sanctuary for the eco-friendly traveller. Just over 300 km off the coast of Natal, Fernando de Noronha attracts lots of divers, due to cristal clear waters and the coral reef surrounding the island. Natural pools are within swimming distance and dolphins are frequently seen playing around. Beautiful untouched beaches are a relief from the crowded coast of northeastern Brazil, and the lack of infrastructure helps to keep the package-tours away. NGOs and local authorities strive to preserve the area from becoming over-touristed, and everyone is hoping the effort pays off.
